“UNDER TWO FLAGS”

“Under Two Flags, “ is a dramatic story of intrigue in the French Foreign Legion. It was adapted from a novel written in 1865 by Maria Louisa de la Ramee, one of the most popular and prolific writers of the latter half of the 19th century.
Early records indicate that “Under Two Flags” was first presented as a play on April 29, 1872, in the Southminster Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. The first recorded American performance was at the Garden Theatre in New York on February 5, 1901, produced by Charles Froman and David Belasco. Blanche Bates, well known actress of the early 20th century, played the role of Cigarette.
However, it is thought that several years before the play was produced under the name of “Firefly or Friend of the Flag,”with Lotta Crabtree in the lead role. The play continued in popularity with such favorite stars as Maude Adams and Helen Ware as Cigarette.
In 1912, Thanhouser Pictures made the play into a silent film. Theda Bara played the sultry Cigarette in a 1916 Fox production. The last filmed version of “Under Two Flags, “ produced by Fox Pictures in 1936, featured Claudette Colbert in the lead.
The script for “Under Two Flags” has been revised and adapted for the stage by Dorothy Mackin, Richard Hanson and Richard Rossomme.
