THE 2004 SHOW

The Thief of Frisco
Set in turn of the century San Francisco, The
Thief of Frisco is a reworking of Dion Boucicault's heart wrenching melodrama
"The Streets of New York".
The story begins during the market
crash of 1886. Scheming banker Gideon Bloodgood is about to steal out of the
country to avoid financial ruin when the honorable Captain Fairweather comes to
him in desperate need: fearful of the crash, the captain wishes to place his
fortune in Bloodgood's hands for safekeeping. "It is the livelihood of my wife -
the food of my little children," the captain pleads. The banker gladly takes
Fairweather's money and plans to make it his own. Enter Bloodgood's wily clerk
Badger, who has his own ideas about the matter.
Badger persuades the banker to
fork over hush money for his silence. Just as the deal is settled, in rushes
Captain Fairweather. He has heard rumors that Bloodgood's bank may no longer be
safe. When the banker refuses to return the money, the captain goes for his
throat. Suddenly, Fairweather begins to swoon; his boiling emotions trigger an
attack and soon he is gasping for air. The captain falls dead at Bloodgood's
feet. And that's just the beginning of the story!
We jump ahead to 1906. We find Bloodgood and his
spoiled daughter Alida living in grand style (on Fairweather's money). The
banker has prospered when all around him have failed. Among those suffering are
the members of the Fairweather family - Mrs. Fairweather and her children, Lucy
and Paul. Desperate for money, they have taken up cramped lodgings with the
agreeable Mr. and Mrs. Puffy, humble, rustic folks who dote on them as if they
were their own flesh and blood. We also meet Mark Livingstone, once a proud and
wealthy gentleman he is now forced to sell his overcoat in the street. Mark is
in love with Lucy Fairweather but when Bloodgood's daughter catches sight of
him, she swears to do whatever it takes to make him hers. Such is the imbalance
created by Bloodgood's evil deed.
But wait, we've forgotten someone! The
charming sneak Badger comes back into the picture and forces his way back into
the life of Gideon Bloodgood. His reason? He has held onto the receipt for money
that Captain Fairweather signed over to Bloodgood!
Will the Fairweather family
recover their fortune before life becomes too unbearable? Will Lucy end up with
Mark (or will the beastly Alida claim his hand)? With secrets, lies and double
dealings, "The Thief of Frisco" has everything a lover of melodrama is looking
for in a show. Packed full of fun and rousing music, it is sure to please.
